Why Python Is the Right Starting Point

The interpreted approach has one practical consequence you should understand early. If your program has an error on line 47, lines 1 through 46 run fine and then the program crashes. It does not stop at line 47 before starting - it runs until it hits the problem. This means partial work can happen before a failure. If your script was writing to a file when it crashed, the file might be half-written. Keep that in mind when you are writing scripts that modify real data.
What "Computational Thinking" Actually Means in Practice
You will hear this phrase and it sounds like a corporate buzzword. It is not. It is a description of a mental habit that makes programming much less frustrating once you have it.
When you approach a problem computationally, you do one thing first: you stop thinking about the whole problem and start thinking about the steps. Not vague steps - precise ones. If you wanted to automate sending a weekly report to your team, you would not think "send the report." You would think: open the data file, read the relevant rows, calculate the totals, format them as text, compose an email, attach the formatted text, send to each address on the list, log that it was sent.
That sequence of precise steps is an algorithm. You already think this way when you navigate somewhere new - you do not just think "get to the restaurant," you think turn by turn. Programming is the same habit applied to data and computers instead of roads and cars.
The bonus skill is learning to spot where steps repeat. If you notice you are writing the same instruction three times in a row, that is a loop waiting to be written. If you notice your instructions branch based on a condition - "if the number is negative, do this; otherwise, do that" - that is conditional logic.
